Patrol Y61 Windscreen Sunvisor NZ: Overview

Patrol Y61 Windscreen Sunvisor NZ is the shaped exterior visor that mounts directly above the windscreen frame on the Y61-generation Patrol, sold in New Zealand as the GU. It blocks high-angle glare, deflects rain off the screen, and gives the front of the wagon the flatter, working-vehicle profile common on Patrols used for towing, farm work and back-country touring.

Stock is held for both the solid fibreglass style and the perforated mesh style, and both are listed alongside the rest of our Nissan Patrol Y61 parts range for customers sourcing a Patrol Y61 Windscreen Sunvisor NZ-wide.

Compatibility

This visor is cut for the Y61 body shell used across every GU series update:

  • Nissan Patrol Y61 / GU, series 1 through 5 (Dec 1997 – 2017)
  • Wagon body only — 3-door and 5-door Y61 wagons
  • Right-hand-drive spec, matched to NZ-new and Japanese-import windscreen frames
  • Compatible with roof racks and most snorkel kits fitted to the same era

Not sure which series you have, or whether your Patrol is an NZ-new or Japanese import? Our GU/Y61 series identification guide covers the grille and headlight changes used to date a Patrol by year.

Features & materials

Fibreglass (solid) visor

A one-piece moulded panel, gelcoat-finished and ready to paint. Solid coverage blocks direct sun and shields the top of the windscreen from stone chip on gravel and forestry roads — the more common pick for vehicles that spend time off the seal.

Mesh (perforated) visor

A punched aluminium or ABS panel with reduced weight and lower wind noise at highway speed. Popular where a lighter roofline is preferred, or where the visor sits alongside a full-length roof rack.

  • UV-stabilised finish rated for New Zealand’s high UV index
  • Pre-drilled mounting brackets matched to the factory windscreen frame
  • Gasket strip supplied to seal the top mounting edge against water ingress
  • Available unpainted (primer) or colour-matched on request

Why it suits NZ driving

Demand for a Patrol Y61 Windscreen Sunvisor NZ owners keep coming back for comes down to the conditions. New Zealand carries some of the highest UV readings recorded anywhere, low winter sun angles that sit right at windscreen height, and long stretches of unsealed farm and forestry road where a stone strike on bare glass is a real cost. A bolt-on visor cuts that glare and takes the first hit before it reaches the windscreen.

For background on the exposure this part is built to handle, see NIWA’s summary of UV levels in New Zealand.

Installation

Fitting is a two-person job and typically takes 30–45 minutes without removing any interior trim.

  • Clean the windscreen frame edge and dry-fit the visor to check bracket alignment
  • Locate the factory mounting points (or mark new points using the supplied template)
  • Run the seal strip along the top mounting edge before final tightening
  • Torque brackets evenly side-to-side to avoid panel flex or a hairline gap
  • Recheck fixings after the first 200 km, especially on gravel or forestry roads

A full written and photo fitting guide ships with every order, and is also available on our installation guide page. If your Patrol is due for a Warrant of Fitness inspection, a correctly bolted visor sitting clear of the wiper sweep won’t affect the NZTA WOF windscreen checks.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit a Patrol Y61 with a factory sun strip already on the windscreen?

Yes. The exterior visor mounts to the roofline above the glass and doesn’t interact with the internal tinted sun strip.

Does it affect the wiper arc, washer jets, or WOF windscreen checks?

No — the visor sits above the windscreen frame, clear of the wiper sweep and washer jet path, and doesn’t obstruct the driver’s field of vision assessed at WOF.

Can it be fitted alongside a roof rack or snorkel?

Yes, both mesh and fibreglass visors are commonly run with roof racks and snorkels from the same era; check bracket clearance on heavily modified roof lines.

Is GST included in the listed price for NZ orders?

Landed cost including GST and any duty is confirmed at checkout or by our export team; see the shipping section above for current guidance.
